History of Montecristo Cigars
It was in 1935 when Menende, Garcia y Cia bought H. Upmann marquee from J. Frankau & Co. with the thought of producing a special kind of Cuban cigar brand. With this concept in mind, they created and introduced in the market a new cigar line labeled as the H.Upmann Montecristo Selection.
The brand name, Montecristo was derived from the hero in the novel written by the world-celebrated Alexander Dumas, “Le Comte de Montecristo”. The novel and the characters in the novel are very much cherished and loved by the torcedores in the production area. This patronage and appreciation paved the way to giving this Cuban cigar its name. It was John Hunter who shortened the name into “Montecristo”. Since then, this cigar brand along with the colorful “crossed swords” has been recognized by many cigar smokers.
The Montecristo cigar line started with the initial introduction of 5 numbered sizes with the addition of a tube shaped cigar in 1940. Later on in 1970, other varieties were introduced to this authentic Cuban cigar line including the Montecristo A, Montecristo Petit Turbo Cigars Especial No.1, Especial No.2, and the Montecristo Jovitas. Unfortunately the other lines, which were introduced later like the Montecristo No. 6, Montecristo No. 7, and Montecristo B cigars were in due course pulled out of the cigar market.
Along the passage of time, the Montecristo cigar line continued to gain success and patronage of Cuban cigar enthusiasts. This authentic cigar continued to create additional members of the cigar family line including Montecristo Edmundo cigars. There are also Limited Editions cigars that were produced only for special occasions like Habanos Festival, anniversaries, and other exceptional events. Cigars produced and released for these special occasions are wrapped in a darker wrapper to signify its distinction as a limited edition collection.
These are authentic Cuban cigars; while these are mostly hand-rolled Cuban cigars, machine-made cigars are also available namely: Montecristo Mini cigars, Purito Cigars, and Club cigars.
